Ezekiel Elliott returns to the Dallas Cowboys.

The Dallas Cowboys and Ezekiel Elliott were separated for a year, but they made sure the divorce was brief.

Elliott is returning to the Cowboys after the two parties agreed to terms on a contract that would bring one of the best running backs in Cowboys history back to Dallas.

Elliott passed his physical with the Cowboys, therefore the transaction is now official. He'll wear his old No. 21 for his second tenure in Dallas. Elliott is returning to Dallas

after one season with the New England Patriots, when he had 184 carries for 642 yards and three touchdowns -- a career low 3.5 yards per carry. He shared time in the Patriots' backfield with Rhamondre Stevenson.

The Cowboys are bringing Elliott back to help stabilize a running game that is virtually nonexistent since Tony Pollard left in free agency.

Rico Dowdle was slated to be the starter running back, with Deuce Vaughn and free agent addition Royce Freeman serving as backups.

Does Elliott improve this group? Just ask owner Jerry Jones, who still thinks Elliott can start in the league.

"Yes," Jones told CBS Sports' Garrett Podell Friday night, when asked if Elliott has RB1/starter potential at this point in his career.
